11:33 pm - Just some words
|
|
Where should I be? 论也无从论起- - Just 10 days left for thesis proposal...devastating for someone who rarely does any kind of academic study. Not my fault, it's just that we don't have that kind of courses --- all we have is practice, and practice. So what?
High school classmate is getting married --- ceremony to be held during New Year Holiday. I'm not sure if I have the time to go --- but it really seems to be something memorable --- he's the first among us! Just think about all those years (six, actually!) spent together, when we were teenagers... everything seems to be different, yet the same, now. I don't even want to mention job... Just as dad says, just always be prepared to be a freelancer! Anyway, I still have time.

11:50 pm - Bro, how are you?
|
In Chinese there's something very interesting about relatives. There are several different sayings for the same word "uncle" in English, e.g., father's brother is one word, and mother's brother is another; father's older brother is one word, and father's younger brother deserves another, blabla...
All in all, wish you well and happy, my big brother.
I'm going to sleep now.^^

10:58 pm - Just to remind myself
|
I was thinking of keeping a note like this, for this year, because everything is just too... confusing, and frustrating if I can't remember them. So ,here it comes.
2006/12/03
Tape hours: 0 (but 1 for yesterday!) Offer: 0 CV: 1 mailed today, several emailed during the week, and several handed out on Wednesday -- no outcome expected... Refused by: 0 today/ 1 before the weekend ;-( Tests to come: 1 (next Tuesday and Friday, MOA)
School: 1 paper to hand in (Tuesday!!) What about thesis? I haven't got a topic yet...
Still have: HOPE ;-)
So, that's for now.

10:58 pm - One day in Beijing
|
It feels really nice to be finally back in my little cozy bed, listening to LES CHORISTES (BTW I really love that movie and all those beautiful songs! ^O^) , doing a little on-line chatting and trying to update my LJ. LOL
Haven't done this for a long time. Of course, shopping or hanging out for a whole day is completely different from taking exams or doing anything work-related. Guess I'm just too accustomed with the comfortable school life... Then I'll just take today as some experience, and, there will be days like this in the future, hope I can survive. *grin*

6:08 pm - How come, THIS?!
|
I've always been fascinated about the slash circle, so many nice stories, and interesting people. But, it seems that after being in this circle for one and a half years (short, actually, right?) and being in charge somewhere for about one year, I, finally, begin to really *know* something about it.
Sorry if it's offensive, I didn't mean to.

10:33 pm - This one seems really interesting...

10:15 pm - Enjoying S.I.
|
I'm not a workaholic or something, and I will NEVER be happy if life is left with work and nothing else. So I've always been admiring those who can spend a whole day in the sound-lab, several days a week, weeks, months...
But the fact is, simultaneous interpretation is something that needs unremitted practice, and even a student like me knows better than to idle too much. So here it comes, like it or not, I should spend at least a couple of hours doing exercises -- so-called "tape-hour". And, given that I ACTUALLY idled away most of my first-year time, this second/last year deserves some attention and hardwork, afterall that's what I'm here for.
Not saying that I enjoy it that much, but sometimes it can be fun, strangely. I'm not sure whether it fits what the teacher said back at the beginning of the course, but I can truly sense some differences now. It is said that through practice you will be able to speak while listening and thinking -- all at the same time, which I found rather difficult a couple of months ago, but now, if the speech is not very difficult, okay, if it is a relatively simply one, I will find that I can do this.
It's a strange yet amazing feeling, like straighting everything out, pulling threads together, and sending your own thinking down to the audience. And, what's more strange is that, it wholly depends on my own status -- when I'm sleepy, or lack of rest, not in good mood or shape, I will find everything difficult, even the simplest ones; and when I feel okay and able to concentrate, well, I can just sit and enjoy. AND and, when I sit down to review my performance, I'm always amazed how on earth could I manage out something like what I said --- really interesting feeling. *grin*
That's mainly about English -> Chinese. For C -> E, the fun lies in the fact that you can always sense the cultural collision there -- okay I used too big a term...let's put it simple -- very often, some Chinese words/sayings, if translated on a word-to-word basis, will be meaningless in English... really! I sometimes cannot help laughing while listening to C->E practice-tapes, like this morning when I heard Bo Xilai's remark on Italy and Marco Polo -- it's really frustrating to interpret such sayings, but it's also funny to think about it.
So much for school...wow.

10:58 pm - 34% English? Sure...
|
You are 34% English. Keep it up, in a few years you might become acclimatised.
"And did those feet In ancient times, Walk upon England's mountains green? And was the holy Lamb of God In England's pleasant pastures seen?"
Well, no, but it's a cracking good tune.
How English are you? Create a Quiz
Interesting quiz, really. Being a girl born and brought up in China I would be totally surprised if I could get a high score... So, that's a good quiz.^^
Wondering if there's one for Chinese? Or maybe I can create one myself.- - Only that the characters of Chinese people are far more complicated....

9:42 pm - Writing and Translating
|
Yesterday I was chatting with a friend about her new NCIS story --- another girl finally *persuaded* her to write one, good news. *grin* We realized that actually there were A LOT of things in common between Gibbs and ... Mulder (just don't shoot, thank you...) I'm not saying the "father figure" or something, just that both the two are intelligent, do not care too much for so-called "rules", do not like to socialize, both excellent field agents, see the point there?... Who knows, maybe ten years later Mulder can be another Gibbs.
When people talk about Xanthe, they might, very likely, regard her as a "very powerful writer". And she IS. So are several others.

9:14 pm - Mid-term, WOW~~
|
Tomorrow, mid-term exam, translation studies --- a course presided by the DEAN!
Actually I've never got any idea what he's been talking about... well, I admit that translation theories and studies can be fun, but not this one, and not one regarded as a course. Just have a look at those little threads I pulled at the BBS of JJ --- THAT is fun^^
Back to the topic. It's sad to say that grad students don't like academic pursuit --- but anyway, we are actually more technical trainees than grad students. For those who might feel confused, yeah, there DO exit grad students who are VERY capable of academic studies in China, it's simply not me. - - I've always believed that anything you like, you can do a little research into that, but when it becomes something that you MUST do, okay, no fun, no longer, no more...
So, pray for tomorrow, hope it'll be fine, since roughly everyone in the class has the same idea.....

Finally decided not to care about the timing system of LJ... can be rather interesting, actually- -
Who knows what time might show up above the titles? Any time but not MY time... Obviously the LJ is not too Chinese yet. Good sign, not too many people would choose it this way. Then what if the MSN SPACE continues to malfunction? Who knows...

1:50 pm - Dallas, Texas?...
|
|
Just back from a five-day business trip... seen a lot, done a lot, and known a lot...
Seems rather simple a comment, but that's the way it was. Finally got the chance to get acquainted with Texas accent. *grin* Guess my accent right now is also some sort of Texas... who knows, a few days in school and I'll be back.
He said he's from Dallas, and a few days later it turned out to be somewhere under the jurisdiction of Dallas, another place whose name I can't remember at present. Quite similar to the case in China, like a small village that reports to a town that reports to a smaller city that reports to a bigger city that reports to, for example, a provincial capital, then you can say that the small village is in that capital... Just like you can say that the Great Wall at Badaling is in Beijing, while actually it's a three-hour drive from the city centre...
Well, the more you get in touch with the outside world, the more you realize that there is far more similarities than differences between yourself and people from other countries... Just as when I was reading DANVILLE I found out so many ideas of the Skinner family that resembled Chinese philosophy... always amazing to know so.

11:03 pm - Mandate
|
Well, one whole horrible week emmerged in UN instruments... - -||||||||
I don't know what to say about this. So-called assignment by the school, and so-called for the sake of our own thesis... anyway, when a student is assigned by the school to do something, you simply cannot say no, right?
In pursuing the translation... there was one word I was not quite clear with --- mandate. What is mandate on earth? The offical term was just too vague, this one appears differently in different sentences... rare case for UN documents! Seems like some kind of work under certain institution/organisation, dunno.
Then, last Sunday, finally, at last, almost finished the work, and the originally arranged party carried on as scheduled (oops, what kind of language is this?! Hope I can tear myself away from UN-English asap!)...
A whole day of chattering/joking/laughing/etc... really amazing, yet tiring. Since I was the coordinator, I had to inform EVERYONE about EVERYTHING, despite that I was the youngest among us. (Another thing to be amazed at, at the age of 23, which is a quite senior age in college, you are still regarded to as "little kid" by your cyber-friends!) I tried to coordinate the cafe for party, discuss the restaurant for dinner, bla bla...
Anyway, when I bid the last friend farewell and goodnight and was walking with shaken legs on my way back to dorm, which is on the 7th floor WITHOUT elevator, by the way, I finally understood the meaning of "mandate" --- for this, is my mandate as the BBS-master, and, mandate, is just some kind of responsibility and, authority^^

10:38 pm - What for?
|
I've always believed that everything I do, I do it for a reason. So is the blog/msn space/LJ.
At the beginning it was merely something new to enjoy and try. I started to keep a diary since about 12, those hard-books accompanied me through high-school years to college. Then, a roommate told me about blog... totally attracted, I was. The desire to share never seized -- that's human nature.
After shifting from BLOGCN to MSN and now to LJ, I'm really growing lazy.
I mean, after all, when Internet diary has become something known by all and written by all, seems the charm is not so obvious for me.
But now, I've found another reason to keep it going -- for the sake of a friend.
Song, not sure if you would see this... but I do hope that you can. Nothing too serious, anyway, just some updates on my life, and hopefully, you might want to leave me a few words about yours.
I'll keep it here waiting for you.
Love.

1:25 pm - Finally, finally, I'll try to...
|
|
As I tried yesterday, and the day before yesterday... to manage something on my LJ, first thing actually.
Then, every time, turned out to be something else.
Desperately...say, anyway, what do you expect for the first time? <gg>
So, that's it.
